In line with the core values of professionalism and readership focus, the management of Deking Holistic Communication Network Limited, owners of News Echo newspaper and News Insider Magazine, has trained its staff on journalism skills to enhance effective performance in South East/South South zones of Nigeria.
News Echo gathered that the two days capacity building workshop/training, with the Theme; ‘Enhancing Professionalism and Journalism Skills’, took place in Owerri, the Imo state capital, on Friday and Saturday.
It was also gathered that the training was organized for the staff including correspondents across the South East and South South States of Nigeria, comprising Abia, Anambra, Enugu, Imo, Ebonyi, Delta, Rivers, Bayelsa, and Rivers State.
Declaring the workshop open via Skype, the Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, DeKing Group of Companies, Chief Chimezie Kingsley, said that the aim of the training was to impact on the reporting skills of the staff to enable them compete as the best newspaper.
He said that he organized the training in line with what is obtainable in the Western countries, where all professional bodies engage their staff in what he described as Continuing Professional Development (CPD) and that the training will be an annual event.
While commending the resource persons, Chief Kingsley urged the participants to make use of what they have learnt to improve themselves and the company for the sake of the society.
The Acting Editor-in-Chief of News Echo Newspaper, Mr. Jude Owuamanam said that the training was a strategic effort to inculcate the needed customer service qualities in every staff of the organization. He noted that the aim was to position them better to deliver efficient and quality service to its esteemed readership.
The resource persons ranged from Mr. Taiwo Obe, Mr. Steve Nwosu, to Alhaji Abdulfatah Oladeinde and Dr. Austin Uganwa. They advised the participants to think about what they can do to generate funds for the organization. They charged the participants to carry their readers by the hands and move into investigative reporting.
