The Abia State commissioner for lands and survey, Barr Suleiman Ukandu has called on owners of land in the state to make them available for positive development, describing land as basic factor of production.
Ukandu who made the call in Umuahia on Monday, while speaking to journalists over the World Habitat Day 2020, assured that all land donors in the state would adequately receive their compensation and other benefits.
He lamented that it was a herculean task getting lands from owners or communities for development, which he observed, posed a big challenge to the state government’s developmental plans.
On the theme of the 2020 World Habitat Day which was: “Housing for all: A better urban future”, the lands and survey commissioner hinted that considering the housing deficit globally, as acclaimed by the UN, the Abia State Government has embarked on building houses for low income earners, as well as create layouts.
He further assured that his ministry was committed to the full realisation of Governor Okezie Ikpeazu’s affordable housing policy for Abians.
“World habitat day is celebrated on the first Monday of October every year. The idea is to reflect on the state of towns and cities and the basic rights of all to adequate shelter.
“It is also intended to remind the world of its collective responsibility for the future of the human habitat”. the commissioner clarified further.
