There was pandemonium in Emene, an outskirt of Enugu the Enugu State capital, Tuesday, when security operatives attempted to stop hoodlums from enforcing the sit-at-home order declared by the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) in the area.
It was learnt that the hoodlums attacked a bus distributing bread around the old Orie Emene market in the morning hours of the fateful day.
An eye witness said the driver escaped by whiskers while the bus fully loaded with loaves of bread was looted and the bus set ablaze by the miscreants.
“The driver is the owner of the popular Chimex bread in the area,” an eyewitness told reporters while narrating what happened.
“They dragged the driver out, looted all the bread he was carrying in his bus and set the bus ablaze.
“Army arrived the scene to restore peace and shot into the air to disperse the hoodlums. There were no casualties from where I was watching,” he said. It was also gathered that two tricycles popularly known as “Keke” were vandalised in the area. While one was set ablaze at Proda junction, the other was destroyed just before Coal City University, Enugu.
The separatists had declared a sit-at-home on Tuesday to commemorate the day security operatives invaded the home of their leader, Nnamdi Kanu at Afara, Umuahia in Abia state.
However, News Echo correspondent observed that many residents of Enugu defied the pro-Biafra agitators’ directive even as banks, markets did not open for normal business activities.
Reports had it that there were vehicular movements in the state. Candidates for Senior School West Africa Examinations Council had their examinations without disruption.
