To improve quality education in Government Secondary School (GSS), Owerri, Old Boys of the school have vowed that they will intensify effort to remodel some of the structures in the school including laboratories and dormitories to enhance teaching and learning.
They noted that most of the fantastic structures in the school were single handedly built by the Old Boys of the school because they want the school to maintain its status quo as the best in Imo State and South East in general.
The Old Boys made the vow in an interview with media professionals during their Golden Jubilee and Reunion Celebration, held at the School Hall, last week.
Speaking, a strong Old Boy and Management Consultant with the United Nations, Dr. Joachim Ezeji, expressed bitterness that the school is degenerating in terms of academics given to lack of adequate attention by the state government.
“The school now has many students who are quite interested to gain quality education. Hence, I call on government to come in, assist the Old Boys to improve the school in order to return it as the best school in Imo State in terms of quality academics.”
In his word, the Class Coordinator, Class of 1971, Bishop Ukaegbu Ogwo, posited that most of the fantastic buildings in the school were built by the Old Boys, wondering why the school has been turned to a commercial hub by the authority who he advised to stop endangering lives of the students and the teachers by bringing in strangers inside the school.
Bishop Ogwo added that “discipline needs to be revived in GSS Owerri. Teachers need to teach the students well to imbue sound knowledge in them. Security should be provided. Hawking inside the school compound should stop just as renting out some of the structures be abrogated”.
Affirming that the Old Boys had in diverse ways erected many fine structures as classrooms, e- library blocks, dormitories, donated educational materials, installed sola power, among other projects in the school to strengthen quality education, an ardent Old Boy, Barr. Ken Nwakamma, said the Old Boys will fully concentrate in remodeling the structures.
Nwakamma stressed that “what we need to do now is to remodel the buildings. I condemn the attitude of the school authority who turned the structures to commercial place. Different sets of the GSS Owerri Old Boys have contributed immensely towards the development and improvement of the school. I call on the students to shun vices, laziness, study seriously to have bright future. Government should also rise to do the needful”.
Stating that the association annually meet to discuss ways forward, the first Deputy National President of GSS Owerri Old Boys, Arch Chidi Okolie, emphasized that the Old Boys have contributed enough resources to grow the school, saying they will always do their best to encourage teaching and learning in the school which he described as the best in the state.
